With thousands of iPhone applications available at the Apple
Store, it's not easy to get a handle on what the best iPhone apps really
are. Every person will have different wants and priorities, and will
look for different things. Whether it's a game, an application that
allows a person to organize their digital photograph collection or a GPS
map application, someone is bound to find different sorts of
applications to be just what they need to help them function. However,
in the latter part of 2009, one site, which is a tech review and news
website, drew attention to some especially interesting ones.
In
October of 2009, Caroline McCarthy, a website author, wrote about one
of the best iPhone apps that serve people who have given up permanent
car ownership and use a shared rental system whenever they need a
vehicle. Among the free iPhone downloads, the Zipcar app is growing in
popularity. It allows people to find the closest available cars through a
GPS system, access info about the car, contact headquarters to book it,
and even lock or unlock the car. As McCarthy put it, tongue in cheek,
"you now no longer need a computer to book that Prius for your weekend
Whole Foods run."
Sometimes, trying to find an app that is 100% compatible with your demands and expectations may seem almost impossible, unless of course you know the actual name of the app in advance. There seems to be something with the way apps are made available to the iPhone user, which seems to only want to promote the most downloaded apps with the most review details and history. This really does not help when trying to locate that special app for the really obscure task.
One app that really does not work that well is the iPhone insurance app, as it has biased commercial intent built into the app, rather than providing honest and realistic information on the availability of the best value iPhone insurance. This is where some apps seem to cross the line, with commercial intent interfering with supply of genuinely useful information within an application.
The MacWorld AppGuide database is another site that breaks down the best iPhone apps from the iTunes store into sub-categories that help people get a handle on them. It also offers reviews and ratings, and also suggests fifty "Essential Collections", both for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Ironically, it's not that there's no help out there to help you find the best applications for you, it's just that occasionally it takes a little help to find that help.
