iPhone apps for kids are a significant emerging industry. In the
fall of 2008, there were only a handful of iPhone apps for kids in the
App Store. 1 year later, in the Education category (with close to 6000
apps) on the iTunes App Store, half of the Top 100 Paid Apps are iPhone
applications for children. Many of those are iTouch apps for kids
designed for toddlers and preschoolers.
Apple
itself recognizes the importance of this new emerging market. During
the week of October 5, 2009, Apple featured 10 iPhone applications for
children. These apps were included in the "Apps for Toddlers" promotion
as "App Store Essentials" on the Homepage of the App Store. There is
also a Kids Games category in the App Store and featured iPhone "Apps
for Kids" under the Children's Music category in iTunes. In addition,
Apple has also featured iPhone apps for kids in its commercials.
The growth in this industry makes sense. The iPhone mom has been hailed as the new soccer mom by Tech Crunch, and moms need distractions for their kids when they're waiting in restaurants, on the airplane, or in the doctors office waiting rooms. iTouch applications for children are quickly giving moms and kids an engaging, educational distraction and alternative to the bagfuls of crayons, wind-up toys, slinkies, and other toys that moms haul around in their already heavy bags. In edition to just being a much-needed distractions, iPhone apps for kids are often educational in content and can help to develop fine motor skills.
